In this user guide, we will cover some of the possible causes that can lead to tape reading errors, and then I will provide possible fixes that you can try to get rid of this problem.

I disagree with the popular statement that “tapes are unreliable” no.Am

I’m convinced that the statements made are more like the Reliability of the following:
1) tapes are definitely not constant and can vary greatly (depending on the machine)tags/content type of drive, media, specific storage). conditions and *what is wrong*)
2) Expected/perceived overall tape reliability is actually higher than in real life
3) No hard data for you (anec data is determined separately, opinions of personal in-house experts, and results of (more dubious) investigations into the very real reliability of the company’s actual operations.

Almost *every* study, article, or white paper cover is either (too unreasonably broad, weird repetition/experimentation, etc.) or heavily biased (because it’s made by the people who actually make the cassettes and devices, the people who sell alternative solutions).

Overall:
a. Tape backup is usually the second largest industry (say, tape drive and adhesive after materials) ice cream inventions
b. Tape backup is actually an unreliable legacy approach (e.g. very finicky hard drive manufacturers and backup vendors).addition, th)

Except even in reported/documented inconclusive cases, a sorting error occurs due to sampling errors.

I mean, you have 110 (say LTO) tapes (assuming they are higher technology/brands and used in conjunction with proper storage) that have (say) backups for the latest ten years (1st tape per month). .

In most cases (usually 90% or 95%) families (fortunately) never need easy access.times,

One time you need access to, say, Volume 37, you will be able to accurately restore all of your site’s data.

The consideration may then return to: “I picked up a random path tape, so I can assume that if all the tapes are in order, then the tapes are almost always reliable.”

On the other hand, in your other free time you will need Access Strap #57, and no matter what you have and what you do, you usually cannot recover data.

Then the reasoning “I took a random tape, it worked, it didn’t work, so I think all tapes suck, tapesunreliable”.

but in simple terms, twice you took 1/120 luck, won once, destroyed once, there is life.

If you tried to recover data from ALL the hundreds of tapes and, say, 119 had no problems or (another set of tracks) 119 were unrecoverable, then you might be able to draw the line between respectable and unreliable.< /p>

I believe (and may well be wrong) that out of 100 tapes, 110 are more likely to play perfectly (“reliable[1]” tapes), but following Murphy’s law, paying for the data you need is in the top 10 , which can fail.

[1] And we really want to define “reliable” here, is 110/120 = 91.67% really “reliable”?
